A thread lift procedure is a powerful procedure that uses temporary threads lines with small barbs or cones to lift sagging skin of the face and neck. The threads are inserted under local anaesthetic in the subcutaneous fat just under the surface of the skin in a procedure that takes around 30 minutes. Thread lifting can restore the natural contours of the midface, jawline and neck, and the threads stimulate the body to produce collagen over 3-6 months. Thread lifting can treat the following areas:

  • nasolabial folds (smile lines);
  • marionette folds;
  • jowls;
  • neck;
  • brows.

Threads are fully broken down by the body, with results generally lasting 12 months.

Thread lifting for a non surgical face lift

Lift sagging skin and heavy jowls with non surgical facelifting. Some key information about threadlifting:

  • a thread lift is a minimally invasive/non surgical alternative to a face/neck lift.
  • thread lifting uses implantable stitches to lift sagging tissue around the cheeks, mouth, jawline and neck;
  • there are many different types of thread lifts. Dr. Aaron is proficient in the best types of threads in Australia (Silhouette Soft threads, and PDO threads);
  • some types of threads do not lift, they merely thicken the skin. These are often called mono PDO threads;
  • thread Lifts stimulate the production of type 1 or type 3 collagen (depending on the thread used for your non surgical facelift) with results improving over 6 months as the collagen builds;
  • the threads for lifting sagging skin are fully biodegradable, and are broken down by the body over about 6-12 months;
  • a thread lift takes around 30 minutes to perform, is safe, and has minimal downtime (general 24 hours with bruising and swelling);
  • a thread lift provides a natural repositioning of sagging tissue, lifting it back to where it was when you were younger;
  • the lifting results from threads are immediate, and last 6-18 months on average. The collagen that is produced by the body will last significantly longer, and provide tangible results for many years;
  • there are no visible scars, and the procedure can be done in clinic;
  • thread lifting is a fraction of the cost of traditional face lift surgery, and is generally a much safer alternative. It is best used for prevention of skin sagging, and mild sagging. More severe and aged sagging skin is better suited to face and neck lift surgery for those wanting a pronounced result.

What exactly is thread lifting?

A thread lift is a procedure where dissolvable sutures (literally a thread) is implanted into the skin under local anaesthetic to lift or reposition the skin. Compared to a surgical face lift there is far less pain, much less downtime (generally a day), and much lower risk. Dr. Aaron uses the latest in Thread Lift technology to perform threadlifting in Melbourne and Sydney to ensure only the best results in tightening the jawline, neck and cheek, giving a more youthful and defined appearance. Threads are made of a compound that leads to the natural regeneration of collagen that you have lost with age, meaning the results get better for the first 6 months following your procedure. While the threads are dissolvable leaving no trace once gone, you will see an immediate lifting effect straight after your non-surgical facelift.

The thread lift procedure is performed using both topical and injected local anaesthetic, meaning there is only mild discomfort. In general, it is a very well tolerated procedure, with only mild bruising and rarely, some temporary skin dimples that quickly resolve.

Whilst a thread lift is not a permanent solution to lift sagging skin, the collagen that is produced will give you plenty of benefit for many years. Even surgical facelift procedures are not permanent solutions, as skin continues to stretch, and they may need repeating every 8-10 years. Having a thread lift in Melbourne or Sydney with Dr. Aaron can wind back the clock by lifting saggy skin, and help you to age gracefully and naturally by restoring collagen in the skin, potentially avoiding the need for expensive surgery altogether.

How is a thread lift performed?

A thread lift works best when the face is treated as a whole, however the individual areas that are often treated are:

  • cheeks and nasolabial folds: Restoring the natural curve of your mid-face (known as the Ogee curve);
  • marionette lines: Lifting sagging skin around the mouth to give the area around your lips a natural rejuvenation;
  • jawline and jowls: Lifting the sagging jowls to recreate and restore a youthful jawline definition without surgery;
  • saggy neck skin: lifting sagging skin of the neck may improve the jawline definition, reduce the appearance of a turkey neck, and improve the cervico-mental angle (the contour between the chin and neck).

Using specifically selected treatments backed by science, Dr. Aaron can help you look younger, and age gracefully and naturally.

Dr. Aaron has spent years perfecting his approach, refining his techniques, and finding the best treatments that give the best thread lift results.

What can a thread lift treat?

Mid Face and Cheeks

By targeting the cheeks with a thread lift, Dr. Aaron can lift sagging tissue, softening nasolabial folds, and providing fuller and more youthful cheeks. This is all accomplished without surgery, meaning lower cost, minimal pain and low downtime. The threads will stimulate collagen production, meaning results will tend to improve over time.

Jawline and Jowls

Restore the definition and contour of your jawline can be done without surgery using a thread lift. By using threads in strategic locations Dr. Aaron can lift the jowls and tighten the jawline. This is all achievable without the cost, pain and downtime of surgery.

Neck

Lift sagging neck tissue and tighten the skin with threads. The collagen produced by the threads over the first few months will give prolonged results with firmer skin and a stronger lift. It’s time to stop putting up with a neck that gives away your age.

Men

This procedure is ideal for men who have early sagging of the cheeks, and jowls. It can help to restore a youthful and masculine jawline, and leave you looking refreshed, defined and in your prime.

Skin

Short mono threads made of PDO (polydioxanone) can be inserted under the skin to stimulate collagen production. This rejuvenates the skin, improving its texture and tone, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and softening deeper folds. The collagen produced by PDO mono threads may last many years. PDO skin threads can form part of a comprehensive skin rejuvenation treatment, and work best when used as a supportive treatment for anti wrinkle injections and radiofrequency skin needling.

Nose

Some practitioners are inserting threads into the nose to define and slim the bridge and lift the tip. Dr. Aaron does not perform this, as there are safer, more precise alternatives. You can lift the nose tip with dermal filler injections (nose lift). Nose filler injections to lift the tip are one of Dr. Aaron’s most popular procedures.

What types of threads are used for a thread lift?

There are two main types of threads that can be used to lift sagging skin.

PLLA threads (poly-L-lactic acid, Silhouette Soft) are lined with sliding cones and are inserted through a pilot hole made with a small needle under local anaesthetic. Each end of the thread is inserted into the pilot hole and passed in opposite directions: one end towards the scalp, the other towards the centre of the face. The thread is self-fixating as the cones on each end of the thread face towards each other. PLLA threads stimulate the production of type 1 collagen.

PDO threads (polydioxanone) are generally lined with barbs (small spikes) and are inserted through a pilot hole. The key difference in the insertion of PDO threads compared to PLLA threads is the location of the pilot hole. PDO threads are inserted more towards the hairline, and are passed under the skin towards the centre of the face. Multiple threads are inserted through the same hole, and are then tied together to fix them into place. PDO threads stimulate the production of type 3 collagen.

How many threads are needed for a lift?

The amount of threads you need to lift sagging skin for your non surgical face lift will depend on the type of threads used, how saggy your skin is, and how much of a lift you want. When using threads to lift sagging skin, using more is almost always preferable. This is because using more threads distributes the weight, meaning each thread has less work to do.

When using PLLA threads, generally anywhere from 6-12 may be inserted.

If your non surgical face thread lift uses PDO threads, then 8-20 threads may be used.

PLLA and PDO threads can be used in combination to get the benefits of both types of fixation.

Thread lifting vs. facelift surgery

Thread lifting is a minimally invasive, non surgical treatment designed to reposition sagging skin and boost collagen production to improve tissue quality and slow the ageing process. It takes 30-45 minutes, has no incisions, minimal downtime (generally just some swelling and bruising), and immediate results. It can be combined with other treatments like dermal fillers and anti wrinkle treatment for a more comprehensive result. A thread lift is ideal for someone with early or mild sagging skin who would like to refresh their appearance and slow the ageing process without surgery.

A facelift is an invasive surgery that removes excess skin of the face. It requires general anaesthetic, has a few weeks of downtime, and risks including permanent nerve injury. A facelift does not restore collagen or improve the skin that is not removed. Facelifting surgery is more suitable for those with moderate to severe sagging skin who want a dramatic improvement in their concerns, and who are accepting of the expense, downtime and risk of cosmetic facial surgery.

Non surgical face lifting with threads is now available in Melbourne and Sydney

If you have been searching for a threadlift for sagging skin, a non surgical facelift, or even a facelift to wind back the clock, Dr. Aaron offers it in both Melbourne and Sydney. Thread lifting treatment areas

The secret to achieving the best thread lifting results is to treat the face as a whole, and combine lifting threads with other treatment modalities such as dermal fillers and fat dissolving injections. Thread lifting has powerful benefits in preventing ageing through both the support it provides to your facial tissue and the collagen stimulation process.

Where thread lifting can be used:

Eyebrow thread lift

Threads can be used to lift up sagging eyebrows and reduce upper eyelid hooding. When positioned on the outside of the brow tail, the can reshape the outer eyebrow and eye in a treatment known as the fox eye thread lift. Brow threads do not work for everyone, and their reliability can be improved by combining them with others treatments such as brow dermal filler and brow lift anti wrinkle injections.

Cheek thread lift

Heavy nasolabial folds (sometimes called smile lines) are a common sign of ageing, and result from a combination of volume loss and sagging skin. Threads can be used to lift up sagging skin, and when combined with dermal filler to restore lost volume, can achieve a noticeable yet natural improvement in the appearance of nasolabial folds.

Marionette fold thread lift

The marionette lines, or melomental folds (the grooves that run from the corners of the mouth to the jawline) are caused by changes in the support structures of the lower face and sagging skin. Threads can be used to lift up the saggy skin, softening the appearance of the marionette lines. Dermal fillers can also be used in combination with threads for a more comprehensive and natural rejuvenation.

Jowl thread lift

The jowls are the small pockets of fat and excess skin that sags below the jawline as you age. Threads can be used to lift jowls back up above the jawline, restoring the definition of the lower face. Fat dissolving injections can also be used to permanently shrink the jowl fat, and dermal filler can add structural support to neighbouring areas for a comprehensive lower face rejuvenation.

Neck thread lift

Sagging neck skin and under chin fullness can often come as a shock to many people. It typically develops gradually, and once it arrives, it can make you look older than you are (or feel). Threads can lift up sagging neck skin and restore collagen that has been lost with age. Double chin fat dissolving injections can also be used to reduce under chin fullness, and improve the results of your neck rejuvenation, giving your a more youthful and pleasing neck contour.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do thread lifts work?

A thread lift procedure involves inserting very fine threads under the skin through a tiny hole made with a small needle. The threads grip the under surface of the skin enabling the thread lift specialist to lift up the sagging skin. The threads are then secured to hold the lifted position of the skin.

Threads are broken down by the body over time, and are replaced by collagen which helps slow down further ageing and skin sagging.

Do thread lifts really work?

Thread lifts are successful when performed in the right candidate. The most suitable candidate for a thread lift is someone aged between 30 and 50, with mild sagging skin of the cheeks, jowls or neck, and who wants to avoid the cost, risk scars and downtime associated with surgery.

Patients with moderate to severe skin sagging will have a low chance of success.

What areas of the face can be treated with thread lifts?

Thread lifting can treat sagging skin in the following areas:

  • neck;
  • cheeks;
  • nasolabial folds;
  • marionette lines;
  • jowls;
  • brows.
How are thread lifts performed?

Thread lifting is a quick, safe and no downtime procedure. The steps involved in a thread lift are as follows:

  • accurate markings will be made to ensure symmetry;
  • the skin will be extensively cleaned to reduce the risk of infection;
  • local anaesthetic will be injected at key locations on the face;
  • the threads will be inserted under the skin through a small holw made with a needle, and are then pulled into position;
  • the threads are then secured and trimmed.
How many threads will I need for a lift?

The number of threads needed will depend on the type of thread used. Generally, you will need two threads per treatment are, per side at a minimum (totally 4).

Are thread lifts painful?

Thread lifts only have mild discomfort when performed correctly. The use of strong local anaesthetic ensures a comfortable procedure.

How long until I can see the results of my thread lift?

You will notice an immediate lift in your sagging skin after the thread lift procedure. The results generally improve over the first 3-6 months as collagen is produced by the body around the thread.

Is thread lifting safe?

Thread lifting is a very safe procedure performed countless times around the world every year. Some common side effects are mild bruising and swelling that usually settle quickly.

What are lifting threads made of?

The threads used in a thread lift procedure may be made of polydioxanone (PDO) or poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) depending on the type. These compounds are fully biocompatible and biodegradable, meaning the body generally does not react adversely to them, and breaks them down with natural pathways over time.

Should I have a thread lift?

If you have concerns of mild sagging skin near the nose, mouth, jawline and neck and want to avoid surgery then a thread lift procedure may be ideal for you.

You can achieve the best results with a thread lift by combining it with structural dermal fillers or fat dissolving injections to the double chin or jowl where appropriate.

What do I have to avoid after my thread lift?

Following your thread lift, you should adhere to the following:

  • avoid alcohol for 48 hours;
  • avoid moderate to high impact exercise for 2 weeks;
  • avoid touching, rubbing or massaging the treated area for 2 weeks;
  • sleep on an extra pillow for 2-3 nights to minimise swelling;
  • apply pressure and ice to minimise bruising and swelling.
Why do people chose a thread lift over surgery?

There are a number of reasons people may opt for a thread lift over surgery to address mild to moderate sagging skin, including:

  • it achieves an immediate result;
  • it avoid the risk, downtime and recovery of surgery and general anaesthesia;
  • it is a minimally invasive procedure that only takes 30 minutes;
  • the threads stimulate collagen production, reversing some age related tissue changes;
  • it may delay the need for face and neck lift surgery by restoring collagen and slowing further sag.
