Dermal filler injections are a great way to naturally improve your appearance with minimal discomfort and no downtime. Unlike traditional cosmetic surgery, dermal fillers only take minutes to perform, and are fully reversible. They can balance facial features, improve deep folds and wrinkles, hydrate and plump the lips, and masculinise or feminise the face. The areas that can be treated with dermal fillers include the following:

The best results with dermal fillers are often achieved by treating multiple areas simultaneously. This ensures that a single area is not ‘overfilled’, and that your results look natural and balanced.

Almost everyone can benefit from an expert dermal filler treatment.

The best dermal filler treatments in Sydney and Melbourne

Dr. Aaron Stanes offers the best dermal fillers in Melbourne and Sydney. Whether it be cheek augmentationlip fillersnose fillers (also known as the liquid nose job or non surgical rhinoplasty), or under eye fillers, Dr. Aaron provides the knowledge, skill and collaborative approach that works with you, to achieve results that complement your natural beauty, rather than dramatically change how you look.

Many people have reservations about having dermal filler treatments, and rightly so. Weekend short courses taught to amateurs with no experience in cosmetic medicine run frequently, and the industry remain poorly regulated. There is no strict requirement to undergo training, and no measurable benchmark with which to assess who does and who doesn’t know what they are doing. The result – poor outcomes, and negative experience makes a great news story; plus botched dermal fillers are on show for all to see. Well done dermal fillers on the other hand, look natural and elegant, with people simply perceiving someone as looking great, and fresh.

Benefits of dermal fillers

Well performed dermal fillers are a great way to refresh your appearance, and contour and define facial features. They are much more affordable than surgery, are safe, and have no downtime. When done by an experienced cosmetic doctor, many areas of the face can be refined including:

Although bruising is uncommon, it can be easily covered with makeup, and swelling can be minimised by applying ice. Most people resume normal activity immediately, and some often come for treatment during their lunch break.

How are dermal fillers performed?

Following a detailed consultation, Dr. Aaron will work with you to develop a personalised dermal filler treatment plan. Once you have made a decision about your filler injections, you will have clinical photos taken, and the skin will then be marked. Anaesthetic is often applied, and small needles are then used to inject dermal fillers in targeted areas.

Dr. Aaron’s priority is to give you a great outcome that you are happy with, while being safe, and never doing treatments that are not necessary, or not in your best interest. The results are dermal fillers are immediate, but take a few weeks to fully settle in, so it is important you give your body time to work with the dermal fillers before judging the final result.

Common dermal filler myths

Many people have concerns regarding dermal fillers. The three most common misconceptions Dr. Aaron routinely addresses in his consultations are:

  1. Dermal fillers all look fake.
  2. I don’t need derma fillers.
  3. Dermal fillers are just for women.

Dermal fillers can look very natural and when done by an experienced cosmetic doctor are often undetectable. Most people don’t want to look fake, and many more people than you may realise have had dermal filler treatments (Including Dr. Aaron!). When used judiciously, Dr. Aaron can strategically inject volume to give your face natural harmony and proportion, or replace volume that you have lost over time, helping you to look refreshed, and age gracefully. When done correctly, no one will known you’ve had anything done, but will think that you look sharper, more defined and well rested.

How old should you be when you start getting dermal fillers?

Many people of different ages are experiencing first hand the benefit of a well planned treatment with dermal fillers. Dr. Aaron treats people from the ages of 18 through to people in their golden years. There is no firm rule on how old you should be.

In general, if you are concerned about your appearance, and are over the age of 18, then a consultation with Dr. Aaron can help you make an informed decision regarding what treatment is right for you and when. You are not in any way obliged to proceed with any treatment during a consultation, sometimes it pays simply to speak to an expert and learn what your options are.

Younger people often have dermal filler injections to reshape a part of their face that they are not happy with. the most common areas to reshape with dermal filler for young people include the nose, lips, chin and jawline. More mature people can also augment bothersome features, but they also explore dermal filler injections to treat the signs of ageing. Dermal filler injections can help to improve a hollow, sunken and tired appearance that makes you look older. They are safe, simple and have no downtime, and are one of the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures in the world.

Where can dermal fillers be injected?

Cheeks

Get a beautifully contoured cheek with cheek fillers injected by an expert cosmetic doctor. Dermal fillers can be injected into the cheeks to contour the shape, and to restore volume lost with age. This can provide a more feminine shape, and help make you look rested and refreshed.

Tear Troughs

Have hollow and sunken eyes corrected by an expert cosmetic doctor using premium under eye filler injections. Naturally hollow eyes, or ones that have become sunken with age resulting in dark circles can give you a tired and worn out appearance, even if you aren’t. Restoring or augmenting the volume in this area can provide a rested appearance, with a gentle contour between the lower eyelid and cheek. This treatment is often combined with skin tightening and anti wrinkle injections for a comprehensive total eye rejuvenation.

Lips

With expertly placed dermal fillers, done by an experienced cosmetic doctor, you can improve the shape, texture and volume of your lips. Whether you want a fuller pout, or simply hydration or gentle rejuvenation to restore lost volume, Dr. Aaron can provide a comprehensive lip augmentation or rejuvenation using premium lip dermal fillers.

Nose

If you are unhappy with the appearance of your nose, but don’t want to have expensive and risky surgery with downtime, dermal fillers can help. Dr. Aaron is one of Australia’s leading cosmetic doctors in the non-surgical rhinoplasty with dermal filler. Only the highest quality dermal fillers are used, and are meticulously injected using a unique technique Dr. Aaron has developed and refined over many years to achieve natural results that suit your appearance. Bumps can be disguised, bridges built up, tips ‘lifted’, and curves straightened, all with no downtime, minimal risk and almost no discomfort.

Chin

A small chin or one that sites back can cause imbalance to the face, and effect jawline definition. By strategically injecting dermal filler, Dr. Aaron can restructure the lower face with a non-surgical chin augmentation to give balance to the face, and improve the jawline contour. It is a great alternative for people who aren’t ready or who aren’t interested in going under the knife to have their bones manipulated, or implants inserted.

Jawline

Expertly placed dermal fillers can enhance jawline definition, and provide structure, contour, and balance to the lower. This treatment is ideal for both men and women who are seeking non-surgical jawline sculpting. Jawline asymmetry can be corrected, jowls softened, features masculinised or feminised (depending on the area injected), and aged appearance disguised, all by using premium dermal fillers injected in key locations.

Dermal fillers in Melbourne and Sydney

Enhance your natural features with high quality dermal filler injections. Dermal fillers are designed to improve your appearance and reverse the signs of ageing. Fillers can refresh, lift and balance your appearance, improving asymmetry and facial harmony and proportion. They also restore volume that you may have lost as you’ve aged, and are the perfect no downtime treatment to freshen up, giving you a rejuvenated, youthful and natural appearance.

How do dermal fillers work?

Dermal fillers are a volumising gel made of a carbohydrate that can be found in the human body. this natural carbohydrate, hyaluronic acid, is involved in cellular signalling, as well as in providing structural support and hydration to the various human tissues where it can be found (such as the skin and spinal column). Injectable dermal fillers are a synthetic and biocompatible (meaning they don’t tend to react when administered to the body) version of this carbohydrate. When injected, dermal fillers volumise the target tissue, adding projection. Being able to add projection allows a cosmetic injector to restore lost volume, or reshape the structure of your face. Over time, the dermal fillers settle in, blending with your natural tissue, meaning your results will look natural and balanced. Over time, the fillers are broken down naturally by an enzyme in the body known as hyaluronidase. They can also be immediately reversed by injecting a synthetic version of this enzyme.

Dermal filler are commonly used to augment the cheeks, define the jawline, project the chin, and straighten the nose. These areas may be treated for cosmetic or anti ageing reasons, depending on your age, and your individual needs and goals.

How long do dermal fillers last?

The longevity of dermal fillers has typically been said to be anywhere from 3-24 months, depending on the type of dermal filler, and personal characteristics such as metabolism. Often, clinics will understate how long fillers will last, as over-promising longevity can cause you to feel cheated if they don’t last as long as expected.

New research on dermal filler longevity done in Melbourne, Australia, is challenging our idea of how long it takes for the body to break down dermal fillers. Many patients often report that their dermal fillers seem to last many years. MRI scans of people who have previously had dermal filler injections are demonstrating that the fillers can last up to ten years.

When examining the scientific properties of how dermal fillers are metabolised and broken down by the body, we see that the longevity is unpredictable.

What must also be considered is the ageing process, and the limitations of treatment. As you age, you may think that your dermal filler is wearing off, where in reality you are simply ageing over the top of it. this is why skin tightening treatments are so important – we need to keep the canvas over the filler as tight and youthful as possible. Not doing so will increase the chance of relying purely on dermal fillers, causing overfilled or overfilling syndrome.

Secondly, the tissue can only be stretched so much. A good example of this is lip fillers. When freshly done, with some swelling, the definition and plump appearance is pleasing to many people. Unfortunately, the natural elasticity of the skin means that once critical volume is reached, any more filler that is injected will gradually be squeezed out of the lips (a process known as migration) by the elasticity. This process occurs gradually, and is often perceived by the person as their filler wearing off, so they go and have a repeat lip filler treatment.

Understanding and appreciating the innate qualities of facial tissues allows boundaries to be set, expectations to be managed, and overfilling avoided.

Overfilling can damage the tissue, cause a botched appearance, and leads to higher costs (in having the procedure and then correcting any issues).

A truly experienced and insightful cosmetic doctor will take the time to explain the limitations of dermal filler injections to you before your treatment.

Reverse ageing with dermal fillers

Volume loss is one of the earliest manifestations of the ageing process in the face. Dermal filler injections can be used to add volume in areas of age related volume loss to rejuvenate your appearance and make you look younger. When done properly, your dermal filler results will look natural and elegant. While there may be some initial swelling, once healed, dermal fillers are a great treatment option for people looking for a quick, safe and no downtime treatment option to refresh their appearance naturally.

Facial balancing and rejuvenation with dermal fillers

Augmenting facial features with dermal fillers can help you to look more attractive. While definitions of beauty are different across different cultures, subcultures, ages and individuals, there are some fundamental principles of what looks attractive. A comprehensive dermal filler consultation will allow your concept of beauty to be understood. Refining the face as a whole, and improving specific facial features with fillers such as the nose and chin, will help you to feel more confident with your appearance, without making you look like a different person.

Dermal filler treatment areas

The secret to achieving the best results with dermal fillers is to use the right type of filler, the right volume and the right technique, in the right area. Smaller quantities in more areas is generally a better approach than larger filler volumes in fewer areas.

Where dermal fillers can be injected:

Lip fillers

Dermal filler injections can be used to increase the size of the lips, improve cupid’s bow definition, add hydration, rejuvenate ageing lips and correct asymmetry. Results can be personalised to your goals, and can be done very naturally, or so that others notice the difference, depending on your preferences.

Nose fillers

Also known as the non surgical nose job, dermal fillers can disguise bumps, add nasal tip projection (nasal tip lift), slim the nose, and improve the overall shape. It is a great alternative to rhinoplasty surgery with many appealing advantages.

Chin fillers

Chin fillers can be used to reshape the chin. Projection can be added to a small or recessed chin to improve the side profile, jawline definition and under chin fullness. The chin can also be widened, making it appear more masculine, or tapered, making it appear more feminine.

Jawline fillers

Jawline sculpting fillers improve the jawline contour and definition. They can also improve the appearance of under chin fullness, disguise jowls (the sagging skin that hangs over the jawline), and masculinise the lower face.

Cheek fillers

Cheek augmentation is a great treatment to add contour to the outer cheek, improve the balance and shape of your face, reduce under eye hollowing, and rejuvenate your appearance. It is versatile, and can be personalised depending on your unique concerns and preferences.

Under eye fillers

Dermal fillers can improve under eye hollowing and circles that have been making you appear tired and worn out. Sometimes, the cheeks and temples may also need to be treated (in addition to the under eye tear trough itself), as volume deficiency in these areas can contribute to the appearance of under eye hollows.

Temple fillers

Hollow temples are a common, and often under-recognised sign of ageing that can make you appear more gaunt and skeletal. Restoring lost volume in the temples can be done with dermal filler injections. Temple filler injections are an important component of many facial rejuvenation treatments.

Forehead fillers

Some people find that they naturally have a flat forehead and prominent brow. For others, the forehead may flatten out as they age. This makes the side profile appear unbalanced and more masculine. For those wanting to improve the contour of their forehead, dermal fillers can be injected here to either restore the lost volume, and add a feminine curvature from the side profile view.

Brow lift fillers

Dermal fillers can be injected around the eyebrow tail to provide a subtle lift, raising its position. The dermal filler adds support under the brow. This can be combined with an anti wrinkle brow lift for more pronounced results.

Upper eye fillers

Upper eye hollowing, also known as an ‘A-frame deformity’ can occur with age. Dermal fillers can soften the hollow appearance, rejuvenating the appearance of your eyes.

Nasolabial folds

Nasolabial folds are the deep lines that run from the side of the nose down to the corners of the mouth. While they are a normal feature when speaking or smiling, over time, that may become deeper when your face is at rest. Dermal fillers can be injected to the nasolabial folds to soften them, reducing their severity.

Marionette fillers

The marionette lines or folds, also known as the melomental folds, area the deep grooves that run from the mouth corners down to the jawline. They occur with age as the skin of the face starts to sag. Dermal fillers can be injected into the melomental folds to reduce their visibility, helping you to look younger and less saggy.

Earlobe fillers

Stretched and deflated earlobes from age or heavy jewellery can be injected with dermal fillers. Dermal fillers help to filler out the earlobes, giving them a smoother, more youthful appearance.

Hand fillers

With age, volume loss in the hands can make them appear more skeletal, with tendons and veins becoming more visible. Injecting dermal fillers into the hands can restore the lost volume, reducing the visibility of tendons and veins, and giving the hands a smoother and more plump appearance.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are volumising gels consisting of a naturally occurring sugar found naturally in our body. Some people have naturally volume deficient faces, and others lose natural volume and collagen over time, leading to a hollow and tired appearance, and a lack of defined features.

Dermal fillers work by adding or restoring volume to these areas. They can improve wrinkles and folds, plump lips, straighten noses, and define cheeks, chins and jawlines. The procedure is quick to perform, and has minimal discomfort, with immediate results.

How long do dermal fillers last?

The longevity of dermal filler depends on the type used, the location treated, and your metabolism.

Longevity of dermal filler cannot be predicted or controlled.

On average, dermal fillers may last from 12-24 months. New studies are showing that for some people, their dermal fillers may last many years longer than previously thought.

What areas can be treated with dermal fillers?

Dermal Fillers can be injected in the following areas:

  • lips for hydration and plumping;
  • cheeks for more definition and contour;
  • tear troughs (under eyes) to improve a tired appearance and dark circles;
  • marionette lines to improve the appearance of sagging;
  • temples to make the face more balanced, and less skeletal;
  • jawline and chin to sharpen and define the lower face.
  • nose to disguise bumps, lift the tip, and straighten a crooked appearance.

The best results of dermal filler treatments are achieved when treating multiple areas of the face in harmony. This ensures a natural and balanced result.

Dermal fillers can also be combined with other treatments such as anti wrinkle injections or thread lifting for a comprehensive and natural facial rejuvenation without surgery.

Are dermal fillers risky?

Dermal fillers are extremely safe and are performed millions of times per year around the world.

Some side effects of Dermal Filler treatment are as follows:

  • swelling and bruising;
  • asymmetry due to swelling, that usually resolves on its own over 2-3 weeks;
  • small lumps and bumps that almost always resolve on their own over a few weeks.

There are very rare complications of dermal filler injections that it is important to be aware of. These include:

  • allergic reactions;
  • blocked blood flow that can injure the skin.

Fortunately, dermal fillers can be immediately dissolved with an injection of hyaluronidase, increasing their safety.

Dermal fillers cannot be performed in people who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

What are the side effects of dermal fillers?

The main side effects are temporary bruising and swelling, which resolve over a few days. There are other important (But very rare) risks to be aware of. These will be discussed during your consultation with Dr Aaron.

Should I get dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are very versatile, and can improve many concerns.

Some of the most popular reasons for having dermal fillers are the following:

  • plump and hydrate the lips with lip fillers;
  • disguise bump and lift the tip of the nose with nose fillers;
  • increase jawline definition and improve a double chin with chin and jawline fillers;
  • soften under eye hollows with cheek and tear trough fillers;
  • reverse the signs of ageing with a total face approach to dermal fillers.
Do dermal fillers hurt?

Are you concerned by a lack of definition in your face, or do you feel you look tired and hollow? Or do you have more straight forward concerns with the size and shape of your nose or lips? If so, Dermal Fillers may be able to assist with your concerns.

What does dermal filler treatment involve?

The procedure takes between 10 and 30 minutes depending on the amount of treatment. Different types of anaesthetic may be used to reduce discomfort, although most people find the treatment to have no pain. the filler is mixed with strong local anaesthetic ensuring a comfortable procedure.

The dermal filler is injected using either a sharp needle, a blunt cannula, or a combination of both depending on the treatment area. After your treatment there may be mild, transient discomfort, and some swelling.

Following your treatment, there may be some slight tenderness and swelling, and occasionally some mild lumps or bumps. These almost always resolve on their own after a few weeks as the filler integrates with your natural tissue.

If there are any ongoing concerns about your dermal filler results, they are often very easy to treat.

What should I do before my dermal filler treatment?

There are a few steps to take before your dermal filler treatment to ensure the best outcome, and the lowest risk of side effects. They include:

  • Ceasing all anti-inflammatories, aspirin, herbal supplements, fish oil, krill oil, glucosamine and vitamin E 1 week before your treatment (Unless you have been advised to take these by a Medical Practitioner).
  • Avoiding alcohol for 2 days before your treatment.
  • Attend your appointment without makeup. If you do not adhere to the above your treatment may still proceed, but you will have a higher risk of side effects.
What will happen after my dermal filler treatment?

Following your treatment you will be provided with full aftercare instructions. You will be able to resume most normal activity immediately. You will be numb around the treatment area temporarily due to the effect of the local anaesthetic. There may be discomfort as the anaesthetic wears off.

The most important instructions are the following:

Apply an ice pack gently for any discomfort and to reduce swelling.

Do not massage the treated area.

Avoid major dental treatment for 2 weeks (Clarify with your dentist regarding suitability is you are unsure).

Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours.

Avoid alcohol for 24 hours.

Full details of the treatment aftercare can be found here.

The dermal filler can take over 4 weeks to fully integrate with your tissue. In this time it is important not to be concerned regarding the outcome. The dermal filler will soften over time, and swelling will reduce.

What is the difference between anti wrinkle injections and dermal fillers?

Anti wrinkle injections soften fine lines and wrinkles, and reduce sweat and oil production by interrupting the communication between the nerves, and either the muscle, oil or sweat glands, depending on the area treated. They also shrink bulky muscles such as the masseter (bite muscle), and the gastrocnemius (calf muscle).

Anti wrinkle injections are temporary, lasting 3-5 months, and cannot be reversed.

Dermal fillers are volumising gels that add volume to the treated area. They can last years, and are reversible if required.

How much dermal filler will I need?

The volume of dermal filler needed for your treatment can vary significantly depending on the following:

  • the area of concern;
  • how extensive the area of concern is;
  • how much of a result you want.

Generally, the more areas of concern, the more work they need, and the more pronounced a result you want, the more filler is needed.

As a general guide, the minimum amount of dermal filler used in some areas is:

  • lips – 1ml;
  • nose – less than 1ml;
  • temples – 1ml per side;
  • cheeks – 1ml per side;
  • under eyes – 0.5mls per side;
  • chin – 1ml;
  • jawline – 2-4mls;
  • nasolabial folds – 1ml per side;
  • marionette lines – 1ml per side;
  • hands – 1ml per side.

The best way to approach your dermal filler treatment is to understand your concerns and how much of an improvement you want, set a budget, and then have a consultation to formulate the best approach to get the most return from your budget.

Do dermal fillers look fake?

When dermal filler are done correctly, no one will know you’ve had any treatment. They will simply see you and think you look more rested, more refined. Something will be different, but no one will know what. Experience matters when it comes to dermal fillers.

Poorly done dermal fillers are widely publicised, and have given dermal fillers an unjust reputation as being synonymous with a fake or plastic look. Rather, it is poor technique that leads to this look.

Dr. Aaron specialises in natural looking dermal fillers that are designed to help you look great, without being detectable.
